I photographed Werner Bronkhorst’s 2024 collection, 911 What’s Your Emergency, in his Sydney studio. The series brings together artist portraits, work in progress and completed canvases, following the charcoal drawings and raised acrylic gel lettering in detail. Through EDG Studios, I photograph artists and their work, connecting the finished pieces with the process behind them.

Photographing the artwork and the making process

Bronkhorst pairs carefully drawn cars with bold, textured phrases. Works such as Need Paper for Porsche and Need Loot for Lambo use car names and money slang to bring humour to the collection. My photographs move between the artist at work, close views of the charcoal and lettering, and wider frames that show the canvases at scale.

For a studio shoot like this, I consider the artwork, the space and how the photographs will be used. Portraits and process images give the work context, while detailed views draw attention to its materials and finish.
