The Crack Collection
I photographed Werner Bronkhorst’s Crack Collection taking shape in his Sydney studio. The gallery pairs portraits of the artist at work with close views of the acrylic and acrylic gel paintings, recording their texture, colour and miniature figures. Through EDG Studios, I provide artwork and artist studio photography in Sydney, creating images for websites, press and collection archives.

Photographing the Crack Collection’s texture and scale
The photographs move between complete paintings and close studies of the cracked surfaces that give Werner Bronkhorst’s Crack Collection its character. Burnt orange, cocoa brown and sand tones form the setting for miniature figures, with each image showing the relationship between the scale of the canvas and its smaller details. Wider views make the composition easy to read, while closer photographs record the ridges, fractures and changes in paint texture. Studio photographs bring the tools, materials and hands shaping those surfaces into the same record.
The gallery forms part of EDG Studios’ ongoing photography of Bronkhorst’s practice in Sydney, alongside the Wet Collection and 911 What’s Your Emergency. Across these projects, we photograph the artist at work as well as the finished pieces, connecting process, material detail and presentation.
